Pittsburgh’s Immigrant Experience Tour

Please join us on a special community tour of Pittsburgh curated by Global Switchboard.  (Time TBA. Departs from conference hotel.)

In Pittsburgh, we understand that our society and our history shape the immigrant experience. Our hope is to give you a layered introduction to our city’s immigrant story, and its implications on language access. The neighborhoods and venues that we will visit have been selected to bring into conversation Pittsburgh’s hopes for change. During the tour you will hear from dynamic individuals and visit venues that are pioneering change in the region.

Our tour may include:

  • A Newcomer who speaks to the immigrant history and experience in Pittsburgh
  • A Bridge Builder who bridges the immigrant experience to the region’s lived Black history and experience
  • A Youth Voice who can speak to the roles that young people in Pittsburgh have in tackling the issues facing their communities
  • An Artist who can speak to the role that art has in tackling the issues facing their communities

Tickets are $10. Space is limited.

Maxo Vanka Mural Tour

Please join us at 11 a.m. for a one-hour tour of the Maxo Vanka murals at St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale, PA, a small neighborhood near downtown Pittsburgh. Croatian artist Maxo Vanka painted a one-of-a-kind masterpiece on the interior walls of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale, PA. The 25 murals—created in two intense periods in 1937 and 1941—are unique, evocative and larger-than-life representations of faith and family; the immigrant experience in America; social justice and injustice and the horrors of war.

Transportation is on your own. Tickets are $10.
